Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation, Professor Mosa Moshabela, says if we stick to regulations, there is still a chance to slow it down and flatten the curve over time.

He says government needs to focus on monitoring the two new Covid-19 strains in the country recently found in 15 people.

"As far as we know, the one that was detected here in South African is still the dominant one.

"So we don't really expect that these new ones could dominate unless if we are not adhering to prevention measures and we continue to transmit.

"Then yes they pick up and if that happens I think we may end up in a situation where if we officially get into a third wave that we might have to escalate our restrictions from Alert Level 1 into Alert Level 3."
