Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng retired on Monday.

He's served out the remainder of his ten-year term on extended leave, which he went on in May.

"The Constitutional Court has been attacked on a number of occasions by a number of seniors politicians and that's very regrettable and the incoming chief justice will have his job cut out to see to it that the position of the court of the judiciary as the constitutional conscious of the country is recognised and obeyed by all in the public sphere," says Kriegler.

Kriegler says Mogoeng performed his job honourably.

"The chief justice will be retiring as a good, loyal son of South Africa."

Eight candidates have so far been shortlisted for the position by members of the public.

They include Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo and Public Protector Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane.
