Improved healthcare for cancer patients in rural KZN
Updated | By Christopher Motabogi
The Provincial Health Department is promising to improve its services to cancer patients.
MEC Sbongiseni Dhlomo made the commitment at the first Health Portfolio Committee sitting in Pietermaritzburg today.
He says a departmental initiative to screen more patients for cancer has opened up the flood gates - with private patients on medical aid also seeking treatment at state hospitals when their funds dry-up.
Dhlomo says doctors will now be flying out to far-flung areas of KwaZulu-Natal to attend to cancer and other patients.
"It's either to fly a doctor there and see 30 or 50 patients than to bring 50 patients from the periphery into Durban. This is one area where other are visiting the periphery," he said.
