Illicit cigarettes worth R35m seized at Durban Harbour
Updated | By Newswatch
Millions of rands' worth of illicit cigarettes have been seized.
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) says customs officials and other law enforcement agencies detected one consignment worth R35 million at the Durban Harbour.
Another one valued at R3 million was confiscated in Polokwane.
Officials say the Durban bust happened with the help of SARS's risk and targeting systems to identify the consignments that were being imported by a repeat offender.
The consignments were incorrectly declared as ceramic mugs and adhesive tape.
In City Deep, 432 boxes of hookah-pipe tobacco declared as molasses and, valued at R2 million, was detected.
They were being stored for export to Malawi.
