Ilembe works to find other water sources
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
The Ilembe District Municipality says that every drop counts for residents and businesses in KwaDukuza and its surrounding areas.
The municipality says it is currently left with a three month supply of water due to the severe drought.
Mayor Sibusio Mdabe has appealed to residents to re-use water where possible.
He will be meeting with Water and Sanitation Minister, Nomvula Mokonyane and the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government soon to present the municipality's plan for the drought.
Mdabe says they have spent over R15-million for the hiring water tankers.
He says plans to desalinate the sea water to make it suitable for human consumption are underway.
"We've secured the land. We're currently in the process of finalising the environmental impact assessment and the geo-tech study. The consultants are on site.
"I have a meeting with the MEC for Environmental Affairs, Mike Mabuyakhulu to look at how best can we fast-track that process so that at least by February next year we have it started," he said.
