Party leaders and volunteers have been campaigning in some Durban areas including KwaDabeka, Clermont and Reservoir Hills where they received a warm welcome.

Deputy National Spokesperson Joshua Mazibuko says the IFP has been on an upward trend since regrouping after a splinter group led by Zanele KaMagwaza-Msibi broke away to form the National Freedom Party.

Mazibuko says they have moved from winning two municipalities in 2011 to currently governing in six in KwaZulu-Natal.

"Adding to that, the fact that there are internal problems within the ANC among the parties that are in the field. At least our leader is one that has been tried and tested. There is not even a whiff of corruption as far as he is concerned," he said.

Mazibuko says the party is confident it'll perform well in areas including uMkhanyakude, Jozini, Hlabisa/Big Five.

It also has plans to take Zululand from the ANC/NFP coalition.

He says with the NFP's disqualification from the elections, areas including Nongoma and Ulundi are also for the taking.

"In the last election, they ganged up on us with the ANC. The ANC alone cannot defeat us in those areas. They had the support of the NFP so we are bound to bring back our municipalities," he said.
