IFP says dog shooting video is unjustifiable
Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen
The IFP says it will support any action taken against the deputy mayor of the IFP-run Mthonjaneni Municipality and his bodyguard after a video emerged of the two men shooting dead a dog chained to a fence.
In the video, Deputy Mayor Philani Ntombela is seen encouraging his bodyguard to shoot the dog while a crowd, including children, looks on and cheers.
The dog was shot several times before it died. It was apparently with the owner's permission.
Ntombela has been unavailable for comment but he has told TimesLIVE they took a decision to kill the dog as it had been attacking livestock - including his - and terrorising the community.
The IFP's Joshua Mazibuko says there's no justification in killing an animal in such a cruel manner.
"It is disgusting and it cannot be justified. Nobody has the right to be cruel to any animal. We are calling on the law enforcement agencies to swiftly handle this matter. We also going to get onto it so that we deal decisively and swiftly with this," he says.
The police's Thembeka Mbhele has confirmed no case has been opened.
The owner - who is the neighbour - has confirmed he was the one who requested the bodyguards to shoot and kill the dogs because they were causing problems," she says.
