The Hawks arrested two suspects in connection with Thursday's attack on the R103.

IFP provincial chairperson Thami Ntuli says allegations began swirling around Sthabiso Dladla after exhibits suspected to have been used in other cash-in-transit crimes were seized from a suspect's home.

He says the deputy mayor will present himself to the police on Monday.

"The police did visit his home but the purpose was to look for some members who was said to be hiding in his home. In fact, they were not there or in the car. It was surprising to learn that the news was spreading that it was about him."

Ntuli says they've noted the allegations against the councillor with serious concern.

"If there is nothing at all that will link the deputy mayor it will bring the question of people using situations to try decampaign our leaders. However, we will not hesitate to take measures if any investigations proceed."

Meanwhile, Alf Lees, who is the DA's uThukela District constituency head, says if the councillor's been positively linked to the robbery he must vacate his office by Wednesday.

He says he got a report from the police last week.

"The reports indicate that the deputy mayor was part of the planning for the heist taking place at his house. That is the report that I was sent. If it was an inaccurate report, so be it, the law will take its course."

The two suspects are due to line up in the Estcourt Magistrate's Court on Monday.
