IFP backs AbaQulusi Mayor's decision to step down
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The IFP says it supports the decision by AbaQulusi mayor Jerry Sibiya, to resign.
The mayor of the northern KZN municipality tendered his resignation on Wednesday.
He's also quit as an IFP councillor.
Earlier this year - the local municipality was placed under administration - and was said to be owing Eskom nearly 50 million rand at the time.
In response, Sibiya said they'd inherited a financially and administrative dysfunctional institution from an ANC government in 2016.
Deputy Mayor Mncedisi Maphisa - who'd stepped in as acting mayor when Sibiya went on special leave - will continue in the role.
IFP national chairperson Blessed Gwala says the party will have to meet to discuss the selection of a new mayor candidate.
"The only thing to do as a party is to prepare for another person to take over as the mayor. There are a number of allegations that was levelled not against Sibiya but against AbaQulusi with regard to maladministration."
