The polls, which will be held in less than 48 hours are the first since all electoral activity was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
12 wards across nine municipalities are set to hold by-elections in KZN on Wednesday.
Nationally, the by-elections will take place in 95 wards across 55 municipalities.
44 political parties are set to contest.

He says voters must wear a mask and observe social distancing at all times.
"Certainly in the queues as well as in the voting station itself. We are going to experience a situation where the queues look longer than normal," he says.
"The phenomenon, in this regard, is the fact that it will have to observe social distancing. It's no indication of inefficiency on our part."
Mamabolo has also urged residents to bring their own pen.
