IEC upholds one objection, approves all party lists

The Independent Electoral Commission has dismissed all but one objection to political party lists.

The commission says it received more than fifty objections - concerning 10 political parties contesting next month's general elections.
Chief Electoral Officer Mosotho Moepya announced the IEC's decision at a briefing earlier.
"The commission resolved to uphold one objection by the PAC against its own candidate, Alton Mphethi, who was sentenced on 7 June 2016 to eighteen months imprisonment without an option of a fine. This disqualifies him from elected holding office to the national assembly or provincial legislature," he said.
He says the ANC had the highest number of objections.
"The Commission dismissed all other objections for failing to meet the Constitutional and statutory criteria. The majority of these objections relate to unproven allegations. The chairperson of the IEC clearly when considering this - said that the Commission could only act within the prescription of the law and Constitution."
