IEC sets January deadline for party registration
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
The IEC says all political parties wanting to contest next year's elections must be registered to do so by the end of January.
The IEC held a stakeholder engagement session with the media in Durban yesterday. The deposit amounts to be paid by parties remain the same as 2014.
Parties wanting to contest the national elections must pay a deposit of R200 000, while those who will appear on provincial ballot papers must pay R45 000 per province.

Meanwhile, electoral commission chairperson Glen Mashinini says the fact that the voting system is not fully automated means it is not at as great a risk to system failures or manipulation.
"The aspects of the election involve registration and transmission of the results. Everything else in between in manual along with source documents that come from the voting stations. Therefore if anyone were to collapse the system we would still be in a position to compile the results," Mahinini said.
