Vice-chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission, Janet Love has announced the results.

"In KwaZulu-Natal of 12 wards that were contested, the ANC retained three seats and won one seat from the National Freedom Party which had won the seat in by-elections held last year.

"The DA retained three seats, the IFP obtained 4 and won one seat from the ANC."

Nationally - the ANC retained 64 wards, lost 2 and won 6 new wards.

The DA retained 14, lost 9, and won 2 new wards.

The IFP retained 4 wards and won 1 new one.

The NFP lost one ward.

The Patriotic Alliance, The FF+ and Good party and Al Jama-ah each won one ward.

The IEC says the EFF saw no changes in their position in by-elections.

Love says the by-elections, which were held in 55 municipalities in all provinces, were overwhelmingly peaceful and successful.

Voting at two wards, one in Soweto in Gauteng and another Amahlati Municipality in the Eastern Cape, was disrupted by service delivery protest.

Love says ballots in these two wards were only cast from noon.

She says the average turnout nationally was 37.83%, a figure the commission says is within the range for by-elections held since 2016.

The highest turnout was 75% in Ward 4 in Port St Johns.

"Given the fact that these were the first election conducted during COVID-19, that the election day was a normal working day and given the inclement weather in many parts of the country, especially in KZN, the success of these elections bodes well for the upcoming municipal elections scheduled for 2021," added Love.
