IEC focuses on youth vote in 2016 municipal elections

Preparations for the upcoming local government elections in the country are at an advanced stage.
This is what the Independent Electoral Commission has said during a briefing in Midrand on its readiness for the poll.
The Commission's Chief Electoral Officer Mosotho Moepya says there are 24.9 million registered voters currently, slightly lower than those who registered for the 2014 general elections.
He's attributed this mainly to deaths but also says more youth are eligible to vote but haven't registered.
Moepya says their new communication strategy will focus on getting more South African youth on the voters' roll ahead of the poll.
He says voter registration weekend is on the 5th and 6th of March.
"I am satisfied that we are well on track to holding the 2016 municipal elections. I am also satisfied that the elections that we're going to hold will be free, fair and credible. Sometime between May and August these elections will become a reality," he said.
