IEC to file urgent application to postpone October polls

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has accepted the recommendations of the former deputy chief justice Dikgang Moseneke to postpone the October local government elections.

The commission has been considering Moseneke’s report following his inquiry into whether free and fair elections were possible during the Covid-19 pandemic.


IEC chairperson Glen Mashinini says they’ll file an urgent court application to have the October elections pushed back.

New voter registration dates will also need to be set.


Mashinini says they will consult with Treasury on the financial implications of the postponement.


"In particular, the commission notes the rational and central thesis of the report that community immunity through mass vaccination must be considered as a desirable step in a conduct of a safe, free and fair elections in the republic.
