IEC axes official who leaked ANC, MK Party lists

The Independent Electoral Commission has confirmed the axing of an official who leaked the ANC and uMkhonto we Sizwe Party candidate lists.

The two lists started circulating on social media on Friday, hours after the parties submitted them ahead of the electoral commission's deadline.

The IEC says its preliminary investigation shows the documents were generated from a workstation at its headquarters before they were deleted.

It says the official was fired after she failed to provide sufficient reasons why she should not lose her job.

The IEC's David Mandaha says any behaviour threatening the organisation’s credibility cannot be tolerated.

"Following a preliminary investigation into the allegations, the Electoral Commission can confirm that the involved employee's contract of employment has been terminated.

“The official had rights to access the system and reports but was not authorised to distribute or circulate the information. The official is from one of the local offices of the commission. The motive for the unauthorised circulation will be pursued as part of the ongoing investigation."
