Idea of silent coup is not far-fetched: Nzimande

The South African Communist Party (SACP) says the so-called Gupta emails appear to be genuine.

The party's general secretary, Blade Nzimande, briefed media following the party's final central committee.

The remarks follow a barrage of leaked emails between the wealthy family, government and business leaders appearing to offer proof of state capture.

Nzimande lashed out at the controversial family and their grip on high-ranking members of government, going as far as referring to 'a centred parasitic network with a toxic influence'.

Nzimande was asked whether he believes the emails are genuine.

"It's a bit difficult to answer that, although they look genuine from some of the responses that we got from some people. We have not questioned the authenticity of the emails, but are trying to give us an explanation of why they did what they said. No one has come out categorically to say that these emails are false."

Nzimande says the SACP wants a judicial commission of inquiry to be set up as soon as possible.

"In terms of what is in the public now, even if half of it is true, it is very serious. In fact, the idea of a silent coup is not far-fetched."
