I was never afraid of anything: Chief Justice Mogoeng
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Chief Justice, Mogoeng Mogoeng says there is no room for fear when passing crucial rulings, like the recent Nkandla judgement, that involve upholding the Constitution.
Mogoeng was the guest speaker at last night's Griffiths Mxenge Memorial Lecture at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
He said Victoria and Griffiths Mxenge, and others like them, showed immense courage when fighting for liberation and the freedom South Africans enjoy today.
The Chief Justice says he drew courage from those like the Mxenges when delivering the Constitutional Court ruling on President Jacob Zuma's private home.
The ConCourt found Zuma had failed to uphold the Constitution by not implementing the Public Protector's remedial action on non-security upgrades.
"When I took my oath of office, I understood very well what it means to carry out my Constitutional mandate without fear, favour or prejudice.
"I was never afraid of anything, of course I knew I was not seeking to do anything that I was not entitled to do. I was not pursuing any illegitimate agenda against anybody," he said.
Mxenge was an anti-apartheid activist and a trained lawyer.
