The Jacob G Zuma Foundation, which publicised the event on social media as a 'welcome prayer' says the intention is to give thanks to God for Zuma, who was jailed for contempt of court earlier this year and later granted medical parole.

Spokesperson Mzwanele Manyi says they don't know if the former president will make an appearance on Thursday morning.

He says there are medical and legal issues that need to be considered.

"We are hoping that he is going to be there, but we want to make sure that if he is there, he must be there without offending the law.

"So we are taking all of that. We have lawyers working on a whole range of things just to make sure we don't give the haters an opportunity to pounce. So we are being very vigilant."

The event's scheduled to start at 10am.

eThekwini Metro police spokesperson Zamaswazi Dlamini says officers will be patrolling routes around the stadium.

"All roads will be busy and also where needed there will be cones to cordoned off the area that is needed since it will be at People's Park. But there are no road closures."
