Humanitarian response kicks into gear as KZN starts assessing storm damage
Updated | By Newswatch
Disasters from days of ferocious storms in KZN have produced an unprecedented humanitarian response.
Teams from Gift of the Givers are on the ground assisting residents in informal settlements and schools.
Founder Dr Imtiaz Sooliman says in eThekwini they are aiming to give support to some 500 families. The support will also extend to various other regions around the flood-ridden city, including Verulam, KwaMashu and areas further afield - such as Tongaat.
In Chatsworth Clive Pillay, who's with The Nelson Mandela Community Youth Centre, says it'll begin mop-up operations and assist pensioners and people with disabilities.
“We are going to go to people’s home, we are going to try and assist them in terms of the cleanup. We are going to take them food, water and we are going to mobilise surrounding communities there to try and assist all these people. To see if we can get the any of these communities to get us equipment to try and help us.”
Dokimos Ministries and other church bodies are also helping with meals.
Spokesperson Bernedette Naidoo says at their local church in Verulam a helpdesk has been set up.
The desk will offer hampers, clothing and food to those affected by the devastating floods. Counselling will also be made available to those in need.
