Humanitarian organisation, Doctors Without Borders says relationships between civil organisations, NGOs, Department of Health and traditional healers are key to controlling the spread of HIV.
Speaking during the Bending the Curves Campaign in eShowe in northen KZN, project doctor Vivian Cox highlighted the importance of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis.
Prep, as it's called, prevents HIV negative people from getting infected and aims to reduce new HIV and TB new infections in the area.
Cox says MSF's community-based adherence clubs help those on ARVs to continue taking their medication.
"If you do not have an engaged community, I should say engaged and educated community, they'll be less likely to test for HIV, access treatment in the facilities, to get circumcised and less accepting of our newest and most powerful interventions like Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis," she said.
