They were discovered yesterday by a municipal worker doing a routing inspection. eThekwini Municipality says the employee immediately shut down the water compartment where the remains were.
It says the affected compartment has been flushed out and is being treated with chemicals to ensure water quality is not compromised.
Officials say in the meantime water tankers have been sent to the affected areas of Trenance Park, Tea Estate, Buffelsdraai, Madrona Drive, Valley View Drive, Hilltop Road and Upper Amaoti.
According to the City the water quality in the second compartment has been given the all clear.
It says while it is not yet known how the remains got into the compartment a preliminary investigation has revealed the reservoir shutter doors were broken into.
