Huge crystal meth bust at OR Tambo International
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
South African Revenue Service customs officials at the OR Tambo International Airport have discovered a massive amount of crystal meth hidden cargo destined for Australia.
The consignment, which was declared as a multi-purpose anti-slip mat, actually contained 785kg of the illegal drug concealed in the cargo.
The seized meth has a street value of R236 million.
"After this success, the South African Police Service’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks) was informed about the detection and seizure and the goods were handed over to them for further investigation," says SARS commissioner Edward Kieswetter.
"I hope this seizure sends a clear warning to the criminal syndicates that are using South African ports of entry/exit to commit this type of crime, and that out officers are alert and working very hard to stamp out such criminality.”
