Residents are being forcefully evicted from their homes.

This after a court order was granted to First Metro Housing - the company that manages the Howell Road housing project on behalf of eThekwini Municipality.

The company's website says the housing units there are for rental purposes only.

However, residents claim they're being forced to pay rent for RDP housing. Rubber bullets were shot and stones thrown yesterday as residents refused to vacate their homes.

DA councillor for the area, Hassan Hanif feels the manner in which the process is unfolding is inhumane. He says he's working with the lawyer representing residents to stop the evictions.

"The problem is when these things happen in South Africa, there are no proper structures put in place. When you evict a family, where does the family go? There's a truck loading furniture, bringing it out and leaving it on the side of the street. At 2.30pm, two of your children come home from school. How do you feel as a parent? It is not a good sight," he says.
