Howell Estate residents open to housing talks with officials
Updated | By Chantelle Lutchman
Residents at the Howell Estate in Sydenham say they are prepared to meet with officials from the National Rapid Response Team, the Mayor's office and other stakeholders tomorrow.
Thirty-one out of 35 families received eviction letters this week from First Metro, the company owning the property. They were told to pay R1 800 by Wednesday or face eviction. Yesterday residents met with officials from the Mayor's office. Popo Zungu says they initially understood the accommodation was on a rent to buy basis.
"I do not foresee them evicting us because it might take place on Wednesday. However what I do know is that we did qualify for RDP housing," he said.
"If they feel those are not good enough for us they must then provide us with housing we qualify for," Zungu said.
