Hospitality occupancy rate above 80% in KZN

KZN premier Sihle Zikalala says he is pleased that the tourism sector may have contributed at least R1.5 billion this festive season.

According to the projected economic impact for the festive season based on the over 65% occupancy rate estimated by the end of the financial year. 


Between the 14 till 28th of December at least over 400 000 vehicles travelled into KZN from the N3. 


Over 90 passengers made arrivals at King Shaka International Airport between the 13th and 26th December. 


Zikalala gave an update on the preliminary tourism festive performance figures and economic impact recorded in KZN in Durban on New Years Day.

He says it's clear tourism is driving the economic recovery for the province. 


"We are at least appreciating the growth and the improvement we are seeing in the hospitality industry where the occupancy rate is above 80%." 


Zikalala says in Durban occupancy is above 85%, in KwaDukuza and iLembe at 80%, other areas its above 65%. 


"This is a good start taking into account that even the curfew was lifted on the eve of The new year so we are grateful"
