Horse roams freely following hours-long rescue from trench

Rescuers worked in the dark last night to rescue a feral horse that was stuck in an eight metre hole for almost two days in the KZN Midlands.

It's believed the horse was grazing around a farm when it fell through a loose concrete slab covering a sewerage pit.

The farm owners contacted the Coastal Horse Care Unit for help.

Durban and Pietermaritzburg rescue teams rushed to the scene to help the animal.

Blue Security official Andreas Mathios says the exhausted horse was given a sedative before a harness was put around it to hoist it up.

He says that took four hours.

"All credit goes to the way rescuers brought this animal out of this hole because there was a feeling of elation from everybody that was there. It tried to resist at one point but realised that these human beings are trying to help it."

The feral horse now given the name 'Freedom' is said to be running around at the Coastal Horse Care unit grounds, where she was taken after being rescued.

"It's running around the paddock. It's a filly. The reason why we've nicknamed him Freedom was because this animal was found on the day of the elections. She is doing well," Mathios said.
