‘Homes, families a starting point in fight against drugs'
Social Development MEC, Weziwe Thusi, is visiting Zeph Dhlomo High school in KwaMashu where a pupil who attended at the school died after consuming a new highly potent drug called Mercedez during the Easter holidays.
She was accompanied by various stakeholders including religious leaders, representatives from anti-drug organisations and community leaders.
A prayer session was held at the school.
Thusi says they have identified homes and families as a starting point in the fight against drugs.
"We want to first strengthen the family unit because you find that some of the students say 'my mother is a drunkard, my father is a drunkard and nobody is looking after me'.
"So we want to instil the parenting skills to parents. They must look after their children, they must make sure that their children are safe," she said.
Today's gathering at the school will be followed by a march from another school in the area to Princess Magogo Stadium.
