Jennifer Sibisi says the blaze started on Saturday night.

The mother-of-two says the father of their young children suffered burn wounds while trying to put the flames out.

"This happened so quickly. I just grabbed the babies out. He tried to put water, but the fire kept on going higher, he tried to get sand but nothing was working."

Sibisi says they are left with just the clothes on their backs.

Station Commander at Mobeni Fire Station, Warren Hlangu, says the two-bedroom house was well alight when they arrived..

"Whilst en route we could see that the fire was going well, flames and smoke could be seen from a distance. It was a two-room wendy house semi-detached to another shack. On either side of the structure, there were formal structures, the fire was going to cause damage."

It took firefighters 15 minutes to douse the flames.

They are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
