Home for the Aged in Durban celebrates 60 years
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
A Durban-based old age home celebrates 60 years of existence. The home, based in Lamontville, says they've made strides and overcome many challenged in the six decades, including having to protect the elderly from the covid-19.
Administrator, Sifiso Ngidi, says at least 8 staff were diagnosed with the virus but later fully recovered.
"They say the residents were traumatised, some of them live with their underlying medical conditions.

"They got worse because they didn't get to see the people they saw every day, the people they used to chat with. We had to get a backup staff," said Ngidi.
Ngidi adds that they do not want to see the elders alone again even on a family day such a Christmas.
70-year-old resident Abel Ndlovu says there's a lot to be grateful for this year.
"We stimulate ourselves for rehabilitation, we take physical training because most of us are frail. We are reading books to feed our minds."
