Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says the investigation covers a matter he's labelled a national embarrassment.

He says a North West government official managed to gain employment using a fake residency permit.

Kudakwashe Mpofu, from Zimbabwe, worked as the chief financial officer.

He has since resigned from his position.

"The country seems to believe that our problems lie with those border jumpers. With the work of a multi-disciplinary team and the SIU, the days of Mpofu are numbered. We have got reasons to believe that these crocodiles are found all over the country in very high positions."

Motsoaledi was briefing the media on Sunday on issues of immigration and visas.

In 2022, the Lubisi report flagged theft, fraud and corruption as challenges that must be dealt with.

Some 45,000 fraudulent visas were issued between 2014 and 2021 by the department.

Officials were implicated in 115 incidents of irregular activities.
