Hitman behind Durban cop’s murder sentenced

The Durban High Court has sentenced a hitman to 20 years in prison for the murder of an eThekwini metro police officer.
Mandlenkosi Ntombela entered into a plea bargain with the State.
He admitted to shooting Captain Zwelakhe Ntombela at his home in Umlazi in May.
In his plea and sentencing agreement, Ntombela says he received a call from a man serving a life sentence asking him to accompany another man to Umlazi to pick up a vehicle.
Once they arrived, they were met by a woman who handed the other man the keys.
Ntombela says the inmate phoned again a few days later, telling him to return to Umlazi as he has a job.
The accused says he was given the keys to the car they'd picked and a gun and ammunition.
He says the woman he'd met a few days earlier was there and told him she needed a family member killed.
She gave him another gun in case the other didn't work.
Ntombela says before killing Sergeant Zwelakhe, and he told him one of his relatives was behind the hit.
On Monday, the captain's family confirmed they were consulted about the plea agreement and were satisfied with the sentence.
