LISTEN: History-making deaf graduate at UKZN 'an example to community'
Updated | By Lauren Beukes and Gcinokuhle Malinga
A student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Westville campus has made history by becoming the institution's first deaf graduate.
Voloshni Annamallay received her Honours Degree in Criminology and Forensic Studies this week.
Her mother Popsy says it was an emotional moment for her daughter.
"She said she was extremely overwhelmed as she got closer to the stage, she felt her knees knocking and she says that all she felt was excitement and thinking about how her hard work has eventually paid off."
She says Voloshini's becomes a positive example to the deaf community.

"I am sure she forms part of encouragement now for other deaf students to know that she had done it and it can encourage them in years to come.
"Also, has a deaf parent, I think we need to have a solid support structure in place for our children to encourage and support them, to not view their deafness as a disability but rather an ability."
