Traffic volumes heading towards Gauteng are expected to peak this afternoon with holidaymakers heading home after a break on the coast.

The N3 Toll Concession is urging motorists to drive carefully on the roads, especially in wet driving conditions. The concession's Con Roux say they are concerned over the number of fatalities on the N3 toll route - between Cedara in KZN and Heidelberg in Gauteng - this year.

Roux says 122 people were killed on the N3 toll route between January and September this year. 111 people died in crashes on the route during the whole of 2016.

"It is only a 415 kilometre stretch of road and is one of the best engineered road in the country. It is constantly being re-evaluated to see if there could be any engineering solutions to crash hotspots," he said.

"However, at the end of the day it all comes back to the driver behind the wheel," Roux said.
