Heritage long weekend injects R12m into Durban’s economy

The recent long weekend has given Durban a tourism boost.

Domestic visitors flocked to the city over the long heritage weekend, pumping some R12 million into the local economy.
eThekwini says thousands of people arrived for various events, including the main Heritage Day celebration in KwaMashu.

The city recorded a 65% occupancy rate for accommodation establishments, projecting a contribution of R300 million to the GDP.
Most of the visitors came from Gauteng.
eThekwini Deputy Mayor Zandile Myeni says the figures represent a positive turn of events for tourism.
She says it shows that the local sector is on the road to recovery.
