Health warning amid DSW strike
Updated | By Celumusa Zulu
A health expert is warning of the dangers posed by uncollected garbage, as the strike by Durban Solid Waster workers in eThekwini continues.
The week-long strike by workers has led to a disruption to waste collection services in parts of Durban.
The DSW strikers, who belong to the municipal workers union SAMWU, are demanding better pay, saying their salaries are significantly lower than those in other metros.

Health expert Dr Angelique Coetzee says the waste poses a risk to the health of residents, especially those with chronic illnesses.
She says the uncollected and improperly disposed garbage may lead to water bone diseases and bacterial infection.
"You sit with a rat that carries diseases like salmonella, that's diarrhoea for all the waste that is lying there and that becomes a breathing ground for mold. Then it becomes a huge problem, and then you get soil contamination from all these plastic bottles."
