The comments come after 49 teen mothers gave birth on Christmas Day in KZN the youngest being 15 years old.

Simelane reiterated that teenage pregnancy is becoming a serious cause of concern in the province.

"Of course, we cannot always say this is a health matter because this is a societal matter, it’s a matter that everyone in the society need to work together to address."

"We need to stop regarding sex as a taboo subject, lets rather normalize speaking to our children about it."

"Of course, we need to encourage abstinence but also be realistic enough to know that not all of them will abstain. Let’s talk to them about condoms and birth control, talk about protecting themselves."

The province's public health facilities welcomed over 250 babies on Monday.

114 girls and 141 boys among them four sets of twins.
