Health Department to approach Treasury as load shedding depletes budget
Health Minister Joe Phaahla has revealed that some hospitals have burnt through their entire budgets while trying to stay online during load shedding.
As a result he says his department will approach Treasury for additional funds.
Phaahla briefed the media on various issues in Kempton Park on Thursday.
He said the department is at this stage unable to quantify how much it has, through various hospitals, spent on generators and diesel during load shedding.
Seventy-seven hospitals that are directly supplied by Eskom have been exempted from the rolling black outs this year, with the hope of adding more.
“We are at a stage where we are making a case to National Treasury because out budget is quite stressed across the country in terms of fuel, maintenance and cost of generators,” Phaahla said.
“It is not what was expected in the 2022/2023 financial year.”
