Health audits COVID-19 death data after sharp increase

One hundred and sixty more people have died after being diagnosed with COVID-19.

One hundred and five of those people were from KwaZulu-Natal.
The Health Ministry says our national death toll from the virus, increased to 17 408 - in the last 24 hours.
Minister, Zweli Mkhize says they're concerned by the noticeable increase in the number of COVID-19-related fatalities recently.
He says they've asked all provinces to explain these figures and what they learnt is that provinces have been auditing the deaths data.
This was done alongside surveillance reports; they've been identifying unreported deaths and auditing facilities on the ground.
The country's registered another 1 700 new infections, bringing the number of positive cases identified to over 686 000.
KZN has 5 716 active cases.
