Hazelmere Dam sitting at 60%

While officials have confirmed the level at Hazelmere Dam is now at 60%, they've warned the drought situation remains serious and water restrictions will continue.

The dam - north of Durban - supplies areas in eThekwini and parts of the Ilembe District Municipality.

Umgeni Water's Shami Harichunder says the increase in the dam level is due to the recent rains in KZN.

Water restrictions in the central and southern parts parts of eThekwini were implemented about two weeks ago, while other areas including Ballito have had their water restricted since last year due to the drought.

Harichunder has urged residents to continue using water sparingly, to ensure that there's sufficient supply in the upcoming months.

"Unfortunately the level of the dam is 60%, which is not still sufficient at this stage to lift the restrictions. In order for Umgeni Water and the Department of Water and Sanitation to consider lifting restrictions, the level of the dam needs to be between 70 - 75% - but hopefully with the expected rains the amount of water available for Hazelemere Dam would improve," he said.
