Hawks shuts down Mobeni clothing store selling counterfeit goods
Updated | By Lucky Khanyile
A Durban clothing factory has been shut down following a raid by the Hawks' Counterfeit Team, ORS Durban Harbour's Anti-smuggling Unit, and Border Security Crime Intelligence.
The shop - situated in Mobeni, south of Durban - had been selling fake Nike and Guess clothing.
The counterfeit goods, as well as manufacturing equipment, were confiscated.
The Hawks say the Nike Brand Protection Manager accompanied law enforcement agencies to the bust.
The Hawks' Simphiwe Mhlongo says the ongoing investigation will help them to identify the owner of the factory - who will be charged with Contravention of the Counterfeit Goods Act.
"The owner was not on the premises when the members arrived. He will be summoned and appear in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court. The value of the counterfeit together with the equipment is approximately R5-million," he said.
