Hawks probing two KwaDukuza officials for fraud, corruption

KwaDukuza Mayor Lindile Nhaca has cracked the whip on two municipal officials linked to claims of fraud and corruption.

A forensic report by an an independent legal team uncovered serious allegations of misconduct relating to the misappropriation of public funds. 

 

An internal process found that there is prima-facie evidence for the municipal manager to commission a forensic probe. 

 

According to the report, a municipal official allegedly committed fraud by paying stipends to the tune of over R600 000 to ghost ward committee members using four bank accounts.

Another official is alleged to have created fictitious contractor invoices and diverted funds amounting to over R700 000 to her personal banking account. 

 

The matter has been handed over to the Hawks for further investigation. 

 

Nhaca says it's appalling, 

 

"This is why (the Hawks are investigating). Suspicions into transactions to ward committees through the municipality’s bank account by a staff member. The allegations of fraudulent payments to fictitious contractor invoices. 

"Allegations of financial misconduct committed by a service provider who was alleged to have made payments due to an account that was no longer in use by the municipality."
