Hawks arrest nine suspects linked to multi-million VAT scam

Nine suspects are due to line up in Specialised Commercial Crime Courts in Durban and Pretoria today.

Eight men and a woman, aged between 35 and 70, are accused of running a VAT scam that defrauded SARS of R90-million.
"They used fake VAT vendor details, where they would claim VAT which was paid into their account and then loaded into their current account," he says.
HAWKS spokesperson, Hangwani Mulaudzi says they carried out seizure operations at 12 properties in KZN and Gauteng yesterday. He says fraudulently obtained refunds were claimed by bookkeepers at 15-companies in both provinces.
"We also seized some of the items found in the houses - Krugerrands, ID documents, which will be the subject of further investigation," he says.

Luxury vehicles were also seized at estate homes in Centurion, Gauteng.
