Sicelo Mpanza had been in hospital under police guard since the incident on the Bluff just over three weeks ago.

Mpanza and another suspect were captured on CCTV camera approaching a Tazz that had been waiting for a boom gate at a mall to open.

Mpanza went to the driver's side, opened the door and grabbed the motorist’s handbag before fleeing.

The driver, Sandy-Lee Ward, drove through the boom gate and pursued the bag snatcher, eventually hitting him with her car.

Ward told Newswatch she didn't intend to knock down the man and only wanted to get her bag back as it contained important and sensitive information.

Mpanza has spent the past few weeks in hospital being treated for his injuries.

The National Prosecuting Authority in KwaZulu-Natal says Mpanza, who faces a charge of common robbery, opted for legal aid.

The case has been postponed to later this month when he's expected to apply for bail.

The second suspect has not yet been arrested.
