Gwarube school safety initiative ‘not new’
Updated | By Tsakane Mhlongo
The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) and the KZN Parents Association say there's nothing new in the government's new school safety initiative.

On Tuesday, Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube and Police Minister Senzo Mchunu launched the campaign aimed at tackling violence in schools with the national police.
Police and schools will work together to ensure schools are linked to local police stations, with a committee that will be responsible for ensuring that incidents are reported.
SADTU says a similar partnership was signed in 2011 and has been active since 2015.

Vee Gani, from the KZN Parents Association, says some schools have already implemented such an initiative.
"One of the things that we find is that schools themselves are not taking or following the rules, which is implementing the Code of Conduct and then making sure that there's accountability and consequence management for those people who violate these Codes of Conduct."
