Gumede DSW trial: Court hears of alleged kickbacks, payment towards luxury SUV

The Durban High Court has heard about some of the alleged kickbacks former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede and some of her co-accused received as a result of the manipulation of a multi-million rand Durban Solid Waste tender process.

Day two of the fraud and corruption trial against the 22 accused kicked off on Tuesday.
The court heard the State will call a witness who will give evidence on the flow of the DSW tender money from eThekwini Municipality’s bank account to the companies awarded contracts and other.

Some of the cash is alleged to have landed in the bank accounts of Gumede and the then deputy head of supply chain management, Sandile Ngcobo.
The court heard Ngcobo, who is accused number 5, received R600 000 towards the purchase of a Jaguar F Pace.
State prosecutor, Hazel Sireman says these were some of the kickbacks that were allegedly received. Accused 5 is Sandile Ngcobo who was the Deputy Head of Supply Chain Management. According to the State Gumede, while mayor, received kickbacks amounting to over R 2.8 million.
Others said to have benefitted include Sduduzo Khuzwayo and Welcome Phewa, two former ANC councillors who are among the 22 accused – as well other senior city officials and some of Gumede’s relatives.
