The Grinch that stole Durban’s Christmas lights
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
eThekwini officials say teams are working to fix streetlights that have been vandalised in the Durban CBD, putting out some of the city’s Christmas cheer.
The electricity department says some of the overhead annual holiday displays that have been put up have been dimmed.
"We did put festive lighting on West Street and we switched it on just before the 10th of December. It was all working 100 percent. Then we had some disturbance on the street lighting. Twenty percent are [out] and 80 percent are working," says Head of Department Maxwell Mthembu.
Mthembu says they hope to have them all be back on Friday night.
"The light for the [Christmas] decorations is coming from the streetlights. If anybody touches the streetlights then it will disturb the decorations up there. Someone fiddled with our streetlights.
"We will continue [fixing the lights] today. We can only work after hours because of the traffic.
Mthembu says they've reported the matter to metro police.
