Grim milestone as SA tops 100k Covid deaths

South Africa has reached a tragic milestone in the fight
against the Covid-19 pandemic.
The country has registered a total of more than 100 000 deaths.
This is according to official figures released by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, which show that 100 020 people who contracted the virus have died since the start of the pandemic two years ago.

The institute's reported 44 deaths, but only six were from the past two days. The rest were discovered during an ongoing government audit.
More than 1 600 new cases were picked up, which represent 6.4% positivity rate.
