The boarding school pupil returned to Grey College from Pietermaritzburg on Sunday for the start of the new academic term.

Free State Education's Howard Nadaba says the boy was screened when he arrived and was found to be in good health.

Ndaba says they won't close the school but will sanitise and decontaminate the affected areas.

He says education and health officials are busy identifying those who were in contact with the pupil.

"On Monday we did the same; there were no signs, but on Tuesday morning, that's when we started to see some signals that there might be a problem.

"We immediately contacted the parents, and the parents referred to the closest family who's in Bloemfontein, and then the learner was then taken to the hospital he was tested. Later we received their result that indeed the learner is positive."
