The new details have come out in the Durban Magistrate’s Court where Joel Mohoasa is making a formal bail application.

It is alleged he threw two grenades at 33-year-old Letshego Mohoasa following an argument at their Amanzimtoti home last month - but only one exploded.

The former Air Force Colonel turned himself in after three days on the run.

Mohoasa's lawyer Advocate Paul Jorgensen has told the court that in addition to the charge his client laid against his wife Letshego in June this year, he had also approached a court for a protection order against her claiming she had verbally and physically abused him and intimidated him.

The officer investigating the grenade attack also investigated the attempted murder charge three months ago.

Lungisani Gumede has told the court Mohoasa's wife allegedly poured brake fluid over her husband's head and face and attempted to set his car while he was inside.

Jorgensen has shown the court the permanent facial disfigurement he has suffered apparently as a result of the incident.

He says the accused dropped the charge and the complaint after the pair underwent marriage counselling.

The court has also heard that Mohoasa did not pull the pin on the grenade with his lawyer saying his full defence will only be revealed during the trial.
